Life cover and savings plans, protection first

If your family depends on your income in the UAE, the first question is simple: how would they manage without it? I'll help you size the cover you need, then compare term life, critical illness and savings options across insurers.

  • Term life
  • Critical illness
  • Mortgage protection
  • Education savings
Quick answer

Life insurance is voluntary in the UAE but important for expat families, because end-of-service gratuity rarely replaces years of lost income. Term life pays a lump sum if you die during the policy term. Critical illness cover pays out on diagnosis of a listed condition. Savings and education plans build money over time with some protection built in. Start with protection, then add savings.

The main types, side by side

PlanWhat it doesGood for
Term lifePays a lump sum if you die during a fixed term (for example 10–25 years). No payout if you outlive the term.Replacing income while children are young or debts are high. The most cover for the lowest cost.
Critical illnessPays a lump sum on diagnosis of a listed serious illness.Covering treatment costs and time off work. Often added to term life.
Mortgage protectionCover that decreases with your mortgage balance.Meeting lender requirements at a lower cost.
Savings / education plansRegular contributions over a set period, with a maturity value and a protection element.Long-term goals such as university fees, when you're committed to the full term.

How much cover do you need?

A practical way to work it out:

  1. Add up debts you wouldn't want your family to inherit (mortgage, loans).
  2. Add years of living costs your family would need until the children are independent.
  3. Add future goals, such as education fees.
  4. Subtract existing cover (employer life cover, savings you'd use).

The result is the sum assured to aim for. I'll then show you what that costs across insurers.

Five questions to ask before any savings plan

  • How long is the commitment, and what happens if I stop paying early?
  • What are the charges, and what are the surrender penalties in the first years?
  • Which parts of the maturity value are guaranteed, and which are only projections?
  • What currency is the plan in, and where is the money invested?
  • Does the plan still work if I leave the UAE?

If any answer is unclear, don't sign yet. I'll explain the terms of any plan before you commit, in writing.

What I'll need

Emirates ID or passport, a rough idea of the cover amount or monthly budget, and details of any existing life policies. Depending on your age and the sum assured, the insurer may ask for a medical questionnaire or check-up.

Frequently asked questions

Can expats buy life insurance in the UAE?

Yes. UAE residents, including expatriates, can buy term life, critical illness and savings plans through UAE-licensed insurers. Eligibility and pricing depend on age, health, occupation and the sum assured.

Does my life cover continue if I leave the UAE?

It depends on the plan. Some policies continue wherever you live, while others have residency conditions. If there's a chance you'll relocate, tell me and I'll compare plans that allow it.

Is a medical exam required?

For younger applicants and moderate cover amounts, a health questionnaire is often enough. Larger sums or older ages usually mean medical tests, arranged by the insurer.

Should I choose term life or a savings plan?

They do different jobs. Term life protects your family's income at the lowest cost. A savings plan builds money for a goal but ties you in for years. Most families should sort protection first and add savings once the budget allows.

Is life insurance required for a UAE mortgage?

Most UAE mortgage lenders require life cover linked to the loan, alongside property insurance. A separate term policy can sometimes be assigned to the bank. I can compare that against the bank's own offer.
