Car insurance in the UAE, compared across insurers
New car, renewal, or moving from third-party to comprehensive? I'll put 2–3 real options side by side: premium, excess, repair type and add-ons, so you can choose in minutes instead of calling five insurers.
- Comprehensive & third-party
- Agency or garage repair
- Renewal checks

Car insurance is compulsory in the UAE: every vehicle needs at least third-party liability cover to be registered or renewed. Comprehensive cover adds damage to your own car, theft and fire. Most of the price and claim-time difference between policies comes from the repair type (agency or garage), the excess, and add-ons such as roadside assistance, a replacement car and Oman cover.
Comprehensive or third-party: which do you need?
Third-party cover is the legal minimum. It pays for damage or injury you cause to other people and their property, but nothing for your own car. Comprehensive cover protects your own vehicle too. For a new, financed or higher-value car, comprehensive is almost always the right call, and car-finance lenders usually require it.
| What's covered | Third-party only | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Damage or injury you cause to others | Yes | Yes |
| Damage to your own car in an accident | No | Yes |
| Theft and fire | No | Yes |
| Agency repair | No | Optional, usually for newer cars |
| Add-ons (roadside assistance, replacement car, Oman cover) | Limited | Wide choice |
| Usually suits | Older, lower-value cars | New, financed or higher-value cars |
What changes your premium
- The car: make, model, age and insured value.
- The driver: age, how long you've held a UAE licence, and your claims history.
- Repair type: agency repair costs more than garage repair because parts and labour cost more.
- Excess: a higher excess (the amount you pay towards each claim) lowers the premium, but make sure you could afford it on a bad day.
- Add-ons: each one adds a little. Pay only for the ones you'd actually use.
Add-ons worth checking before you renew
- Personal accident cover for the driver and passengers.
- Roadside assistance: towing, battery boost, flat tyre and fuel delivery.
- Replacement car while yours is in the workshop. Check how many days are included.
- Oman cover: if you drive across the border, the policy must say so.
- Storm and flood (natural perils) damage: worth confirming in writing since the April 2024 floods.
- Off-road cover if you drive in the desert. Many standard policies exclude it.
Renewing? Start 2–4 weeks before expiry
Auto-renewal is convenient but rarely the best price. Send me your current policy schedule a few weeks before it expires and I'll check it against current options with the same or better cover. If you're switching insurer, a no-claims letter from your current insurer can bring the new premium down.

Frequently asked questions
Is agency repair worth paying for?
For new and nearly-new cars, usually yes: repairs are done at the brand's dealer workshop with original parts, which protects the car's value and any manufacturer warranty. As a car gets older, many insurers stop offering agency repair or price it much higher, and garage repair becomes the better value.
Can I get comprehensive cover for an older car?
Often yes, but the choice narrows as the car ages, and some insurers limit comprehensive or agency repair by vehicle age. That's exactly where comparing across insurers helps: I'll show you who will still cover it and on what terms.
What is the excess?
The excess (or deductible) is the amount you pay towards each claim before the insurer pays the rest. A higher excess means a lower premium. Some policies charge a higher excess for young or newly licensed drivers.
Does my UAE car insurance cover me in Oman?
Only if the policy includes an Oman extension. It is a common add-on, but check your schedule before you cross the border. I'll flag it when comparing options.
How quickly can I get a policy?
Once I have your documents by email, compared options usually come back the same working day, and the policy can be issued as soon as you choose and pay. Final terms are set by the insurer's underwriting.
Will my no-claims history count with a new insurer?
Usually, if you can show it. Ask your current insurer for a no-claims letter or certificate. Many insurers give a discount for a clean record, but each insurer decides how much.
